The Hamdanids were one of the regional powers during the period of the Abbasid Caliphate who, through their political and military actions, sought to consolidate their authority and reduce their dependence on the caliphal center. Employing Immanuel Wallerstein’s World-Systems Theory, this study examines the position of the Hamdanids within the political and military order of the time. The main question of this research is: How can the military actions of the Hamdanids against the Abbasid Caliphate be explained within the framework of World-Systems Theory? According to this theory, the Abbasid Caliphate functioned as the core power of the contemporary world system and endeavored to maintain control over its peripheral regions, while the Hamdanids, as a semi-autonomous force, sought to consolidate their position through wars, alliances, and military rebellions. The findings of the study indicate that, on the one hand, the Hamdanids challenged the hegemony of the core by refusing to pay tribute, supporting opposing religious movements (such as the Shiʿites and the Kharijites), and forming tactical alliances with the Fatimids; on the other hand, due to structural constraints, they were unable to fully exit the Abbasid sphere of influence.
